PROJECT TITLE:

The Hate U Give Feature Film: Training & Scene Coordination

OVERVIEW:

20th Century Studios, Inc. (formerly 20th Century Fox) is an American film production and distribution company owned by Walt Disney Studios. "The Hate U Give" (THUG) is a 2018 American coming-of-age drama film produced and directed by George Tillman Jr. The principal teen cast includes Amandla Stenberg, Kian Lawley, Sabrina Carpenter, and Megan Lawless. On February 5, 2018, Kian Lawley's role was recast by KJ Apa following the resurfacing of a controversial video. THUG premiered in the United States on October 5, 2018, by 20th Century Fox. One Vision Productions was contracted to train and coordinate realistic basketball scenes featuring the lead adolescent actors and extras.

GOALS:

We aimed to enhance the fundamental basketball skills of Amandla Stenberg, Kian Lawley, Sabrina Carpenter, and Megan Lawless.

PROCESS:

The training commenced with the movie producers evaluating my basketball skills, training background, and project management competencies. Following the hiring, we engaged in discussions to identify the specific needs of each actor for their respective roles in the film. Three training sessions were organized for Kian Lawley, while three additional sessions were scheduled for Amandla Stenberg, Sabrina Carpenter, and Megan Lawless to participate in together. During the initial session, I assessed their competency levels in basketball and tailored a foundational training regimen for each actor. We focused on individual and collaborative skill development. The culmination of this process was their final assessment, conducted after the three-week training period. On filming day, I was asked to create a scene during basketball practice for use in the movie.

OUTCOMES:

The outcome of the training initiative for the film "The Hate U Give," produced by 20th Century Fox, was marked by significant success, demonstrating the actors' enhanced basketball proficiency and ability to execute their roles effectively on set. On the day of filming, I was invited to evaluate the hired extras for the practice basketball team, where I successfully assigned positions and coordinated a dynamic press-break scenario for the production. The actors demonstrated refined abilities and confidence, seamlessly integrating their newfound skills into their performances. The overall training prepared them for the basketball sequences and contributed significantly to the authenticity and impact of the film, ultimately elevating the quality of the finished product. THUG is now available on Amazon Prime.
