The Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice Facility Management: Basics and Beyond

OVERVIEW:

The Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ), a state agency located in Greater Atlanta, Georgia, is responsible for the management of juvenile correctional facilities. Recently, DJJ initiated a significant project to enhance the onboarding experience for new shift supervisors. This project is a collaboration with Interactive Advantage Corporation (IAC), a leading organization specializing in e-learning and instructional design. IAC was tasked with developing comprehensive training materials to fully prepare new personnel for their roles as juvenile correctional officers. As a subcontractor, One Vision Productions' role is to create engaging visual content that aligns with the established learning modules.

GOALS:

We aim to create an effective onboarding process for new shift supervisors through a structured training program covering facility management basics and advanced operational strategies. We plan to produce engaging, high-quality training videos that utilize visual learning techniques for better understanding.

PROCESS:

The process commenced with close collaboration between One Vision Productions and IAC, who reviewed an extensive planning document that outlined requirements and goals. A thorough location scout identified ideal filming environments that reflected real-world contexts for supervisors. In the pre-production phase, 216 storyboard frames were created to detail the narrative and instructional elements. The production phase spanned three days of on-site filming, after which raw footage was delivered promptly to IAC. In the post-production phase, editing enhanced clarity and engagement, resulting in 14 (1 to 8-minute) training videos covering essential topics in facility management.

OUTCOMES:

One Vision Productions delivered the training series, which received positive feedback. These videos serve as a vital resource for onboarding, improving transitions into roles, enhancing operational understanding, and promoting a cohesive learning culture within the DJJ, ultimately supporting its mission to provide a safe environment for youth.
