PROJECT TITLE:

Project Safe Neigborhoods

OVERVIEW:

The United States Department of Justice launched a groundbreaking initiative in 2001 aimed at combatting the escalating instances of violent crime nationally. The Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) program is a collaborative platform that unifies federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement, prosecutors, community leaders, and various stakeholders. Its primary purpose is to identify pressing violent crime issues within communities and develop comprehensive strategies to address them. Within this context, the Northern District of Georgia (NDGA) has taken significant strides by initiating two distinct programs: Everyday Heroes and Credible Messenger

GOALS:

Our goal is to produce impactful public service announcements and a mini-documentary that highlight the efforts of law enforcement officials and community leaders. By showcasing the positive contributions of Everyday Heroes and Credible Messengers—those dedicated individuals who work to reduce recidivism and uplift at-risk youth—we will create relatable narratives that resonate with the community.

PROCESS:

Our initiative was to create a series of impactful public service announcements (PSAs) and an 8-minute mini-documentary highlighting the contributions of these Everyday Heroes and Credible Messengers. We aimed to raise awareness about their roles, showcase success stories, engage the community, and support future funding for related initiatives. We worked closely with the USAO Community Outreach and Public Affairs Specialist, establishing a clear timeline for filming 15 individuals in 90 days. We coordinated site scouting, conducted interviews, and oversaw all aspects of production, ensuring collaboration with the NDGA to create a strong narrative.

OUTCOMES:

The successful completion of the PSN campaigns was paramount. We delivered high-quality content that resonated with the community and accurately depicted the efforts of the Everyday Heroes and Credible Messengers. Each PSA was uploaded to the U.S. Attorney’s website, maximizing their reach and impact. Through our innovative, collaborative approach, we made a lasting contribution to the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, creating positive change and stronger communities.

RELEASED is a powerful 45-minute documentary that addresses the experiences of individuals formerly involved in the criminal justice system. Often, these individuals have participated in job development programs intended to prepare and connect them with employment opportunities. However, opportunities for meaningful and sustainable employment are frequently scarce. The film challenges us to reflect on how we view returning citizens. It confronts how people released from prison continue to pay for the mistakes of their past while still holding out hope for the future.
